As cellular networks continue to expand, so do
opportunities for cell tower technicians who perform maintenance, repair, and
installation. This job is not for the faint of heart. Cell tower technicians
have actually to climb the towers to do their work -- they must be physically
fit, enjoy climbing, and have no fear of heights.
Rock climbers who enjoy working outdoors might find cell
towers to provide an ideal work environment. Cell tower technicians work at
heights ranging from 200 to 500 feet above the ground. Physical requirements
involve climbing ladders to reach these heights while carrying tools and gear
-- which add weight. These technicians work outside year-round, facing all
kinds of weather, including wind, snow, rain, and extreme temperatures.
Maintenance and Repair
Cell phone users expect cell towers to keep working on a
24-hour basis -- this means technicians can work odd hours to address outages
quickly. Tasks include replacing light bulbs, antennas, and transmission lines.
A technician also pays close attention to the conditions of the tower to
determine if any structural repairs are needed and take action, such as by
tightening bolts to account for bent steel. A cell tower technician can't
ignore any damage or problems encountered, even if repair work wasn't qualified
as a critical task for the day. Failing to make immediate repairs could lead to
more severe problems in the future.
