Responsibilities
There are four general
types of telecommunications equipment installers. Central office technicians
work at the main switching hubs of communication or cable television companies.
They install, evaluate, and repair the switches and routers that transmit and
direct voice, data, and video signals. Headend technicians are nearly identical
to central office techs, but they work at TV and cable distribution centers
rather than hubs.
Meanwhile, private
branch exchange (PBX) installers specialize in setting up switchboards that
direct an organization's communications. Station installers or field
technicians install phone and Internet equipment for residential customers and
businesses.
Industries
As of May 2018, the
industries that employed the most telecommunications equipment installers and
repairers were wired telecommunications carriers, building equipment
contractors and cable and other subscription programming services, according to
the BLS. Employment was also high among wireless telecommunications carriers
and other telecommunications services.
