Computers and servers on the LAN can be connected by cables or wirelessly. Wireless access to a wired network is possible through wireless access points (WAP). These WAP devices create a bridge between computers and networks. A typical WAP may have the theoretical ability to connect hundreds or even thousands of wireless users to a network, although the practical capacity is less.

Almost always servers will be connected to the network with
cables, as cable connections remain the fastest. Stationary (desktop)
workstations are also generally connected to the network with a single cable,
although the cost of wireless adapters has dropped so much that it can be
easier and cheaper to operate when the workplace is installed on a device that
is not wired enough. Use wireless for desktop.
See the Topology, Cabling, and Hardware sections of this
guide for more information on LAN configuration.
