A local area network (LAN) is the smallest network, usually within an office space or within a single building, used to connect computing facilities, including computers, print beacons, servers, IP phones, or gateways. Connections within a physical LAN are wired and all office facilities are shared and distributed among the workstations on the network. The most common type of LAN is Ethernet, a family of frame-based computer networking technologies. But do you know how to configure a LAN system? What do you need when setting up a LAN?
Setting up a LAN (pictured below) is not an easy project,
especially for beginners in telecommunications. So it makes sense to make a
full plan before making the next move. The LAN network consists of network
components such as cable routers, Ethernet cables, Ethernet switches and
network interfaces. Computers are connected to a switch using Ethernet cables.
Make sure the cable length does not exceed 100 meters or about 300 feet. Each
device is entitled to a unique IP address. Also, you must first specify which
services you need to provide locally on the LAN. The next section will go on to
provide detailed instructions on how to set up a LAN.
